Van driver killed in Kent A2 lorry crash as second man airlifted to hospital

A 50-year-old man has died after his van collided with a parked lorry at the side of the A2 in Kent between Strood and Gravesend. A second man who was a passenger sustained serious injuries and was rushed by air ambulance to a London hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

The driver of the lorry is understood to have received minor injuries. Police have now launched an appeal for witnesses to the fatal A2 collision near Cobham and asked for people to submit relevant dashcam footage.

The incident happened shortly after 4pm on Friday (May 31) on the coastbound carriageway. The A2 was shut overnight and fully reopened around 5.50pm after collision investigation work, according to National Highways and Kent County Council’s Highways team.

A spokesperson for Kent Police said officers were called at 4.14pm to the coastbound carriageway to reports of a collision that involved a lorry and a van (May 31). They said: “Two lorries were parked on the hard shoulder, when for unknown reasons a white Mercedes Sprinter van collided with one of the lorries.

“The driver of the van, a 50-year-old man died at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.” The spokesperson added: “The passenger, a 20-year-old man received serious injuries and was taken to a London hospital by air ambulance where he remains in a serious condition. The driver of the lorry received minor injuries.”
