Van overturns on A689 accident blackspot bringing traffic to standstill

Motorists were brought to a standstill after a van overturned following a collision with another vehicle.

The A689 heading into Hartlepool was blocked following the incident around 9.30am on Friday. Emergency services, including police and firefighters, were called to the scene.

A small white van had overturned on the road near to the Greatham and Dalton Piercy junctions. A silver VW Golf car was also involved. One person suffered a head injury.

Police diverted traffic down Dalton back Lane, a narrow road which also quickly became gridlocked. A spokesperson for Cleveland Fire Brigade said: "We are currently in attendance (10:29am on 20/09/24) at an incident on the A689, Greatham, Hartlepool. Two vehicle Road Traffic Collision. Two fire engines from Hartlepool in attendance. Crews are making the scene safe."

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: "At 8.45am on Friday 20 September police were called to a collision on the eastbound carriageway of the A689 involving two vehicles with one landing on its roof. A man was treated by paramedics for a suspected head injury and was taken to hospital by ambulance."
