Vandals have trashed 22 historic gravestones in a 'callous and cruel' attack. Police say that they caused not only thousands of pounds worth of damage at Leamington Spa Cemetery but also huge heartache for relatives.

Yobs targeted gravestones near the Windmill pedestrian gate and officers say they were 'particularly old. Some were completely smashed while others were pushed over or otherwise damaged.

Sergeant Trent McMurray slammed the attack, saying: "This was a particularly callous and cruel act of criminal damage. Those responsible would obviously be distraught if someone damaged the headstone of one of their loved ones – but they believe it’s acceptable to do that to others."

“We are working hard to trace the offenders and we look forward to holding them to account." The vandals struck sometime between 8am and 8pm on Saturday, July 6.

A witness appeal has been launched and anyone with any information should either visit the police website here or call 101, quoting crime reference 23/28458/24.
