Veep Showrunner Reveals What Selina Meyer Will Be Doing In Season 6

What do you give the woman who only wants to be president? In the case of ‘Veep’s’ showrunner David Mandel the answer was very simple: anything but the presidency.

While the Season 4 finale of ‘Veep’ left fans on tenterhooks over whether Selina Meyer (Julia Louis Dreyfus) or Tom James (Hugh Laurie) would become president after the general election had resulted in an electoral college tie, David Mandel always knew the answer.

Speaking to Bustle, Mandel admitted, “In my mind, this is a show about a woman who wants to be president more than anything on earth. And she needed to be elected. Since that’s what she needs, it’s my job not to give it to her.”

In the end, even Tom James wasn’t elected as President, as the pair were manoeuvred out of The White House by Laura Montez (Andrea Savage). But with the presidency now gone, you might have thought that ‘Veep’ would have quite a problem legitimately going into its next season.

But David Mandel insists that Selina Meyer’s quest to stay relevant while Montez is president is what will drive Veep over the course of the season. Mandel explained, “We’ve seen that she doesn’t deal well with defeat and I think she’s going to lose her quest for relevancy.”

Mandel pointed out that several other former presidents have embarrassed themselves in their attempts to remain relevant after they’ve left office, and Meyer will be just as desperate, probably even more so, to shoehorn herself back into the limelight.

Mandel also revealed that Tony Hale’s Gary will still be by Selina’s side, but she’ll now treat him with even more contempt, while Jonah will be the only character left that actually still has a position in politics.

What about the rest of them? “A lot of these people are obsessed with power and when they leave the White House, they get amazing offers at huge corporations,” Mandel explained. “But it’s so different from D.C. and they’ll struggle to adjust to their place in the world.”
