Veep Will Move To Canada If Donald Trump Becomes President

It says a lot about just how bizarre the current race for The White House is that even the antics on ‘Veep’ look tame in comparison.

This is something that the cast of the political comedy can see themselves, with its lead Julia Louis-Dreyfus admitting that they’ll move to Canada if a certain Republican candidate is actually elected into power.

Dreyfus, who has picked up the last four consecutive Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series accolades at the Emmy’s for her performance as hapless President Selina Meyer, made this revelation to the Los Angeles Times, via Zap2It, over the weekend.

After being asked, “Where does ‘Veep’ go if Trump is elected?” Dreyfus joked, “For starters, we’ll be shooting it in Canada.” At least we think she was joking. Dreyfus’ Veep co-star Matt Walsh then soon joined in, adding, “Or Mexico, behind a wall.”

Speaking about the peculiar parallel between the antics on ‘Veep’ and what’s actually taken place during the current presidential election, Dreyfus continued, “It’s crazy right now. There’s always these extraordinary things we shoot on our show that, two or three months later, happen in politics. But it’s never been like this.”

Dreyfus then recalled, “The other day, I was watching CNN and the former president of Mexico, Vicente Fox, was talking about the Trump wall and he said, ‘I am not going to pay for that ******* wall.’ He said **** and it was on television, and I’m like, ‘What has happened?”

The former ‘Seinfeld’ actress firmly believes that this is just the beginning, though, adding, “All this **** right now in Trump crazy town, we’re just in the stratosphere.”

Dreyfus then noted that the sort of comments that are being made by Donald Trump and the overall political discourse that has been exacerbated by his campaign makes ‘Veep’ feel “like a sombre documentary by comparison.”

In the past, the problem for ‘Veep’ was if they decided to try and write anything close to Donald Trump’s rhetoric, which has somehow led to him becoming the presumptive Republican presidential candidate, then Selina Meyer, who is already a rather reprehensible character, wouldn’t just become even more unlikeable, but she would just seem like an unelectable buffoon, too.

But now that someone like Trump is actually within touching distance of The White House we might actually see ‘Veep’ become even more extreme. Because if they don’t try and match his remarks then the comedy will soon begin to look tame, which is a sad and sorry state of affairs.

You’ll be able to keep up with ‘Veep’s’ fifth season, which airs on Sky Atlantic, when the ninth and penultimate episode of its current run is shown next Monday at 11:20pm.
