Somehow a member of the U.S. House Of Representatives at the start of season 6, ‘Veep’ viewers expected to see Jonah Ryan floundering and ignored by the rest of his peers because of his obvious incompetence.

In fairness to ‘Veep’s’ writers, there’s been plenty of that. Jonah’s preposterous stand in Congress against ‘The Healthy School Lunch Act’ went on deaf ears, he was provoked into making a fool out of himself by Dan Egan on CBS Morning, was ostracised by his fellow Congressmen in Georgia, and was somehow repeatedly confounded by Daylight savings time over the course of an entire episode. But before you start feeling sorry for him, the fact that Jonah Ryan continued to shave his head in order to look like he still had the cancer he had extinguished months before is a stark reminder of his villainy.

There have been some heavy indications that Jonah Ryan’s fortunes are about to drastically improve, though. The reason why Jonah Ryan has suddenly found himself fairing a little bit better in ‘Veep’ is the introduction of Shawnee Tanz (Mary Holland), who during Qatar suddenly announced that the pair were engaged, even declaring that the ring was on hold on Tiffany’s, and that it had been “already paid for.”

While Shawnee Tanz has only been in the show for two episodes, it was instantly apparent from her very first scene that she had more political savvy than Jonah Ryan. However, that can be said of most people in the show. But in just a short amount of time she has been able to subtly change Jonah’s image, got him in close with a group of Congressmen, landed him a new office, and has even given him some clout against the terrifying House Minority Leader Roger Furlong.

With Shawnee Tanz clearly using Jonah Ryan for her own political aspirations, it’s not hard to see the similarities between her character and Hillary Clinton, who after being the First Lady to the 42nd President Of The United States, Bill Clinton, went on to serve as Senator to New York for 8 years, then became the 67th United States Secretary Of State, and ultimately narrowly lost to Donald Trump in the most recent presidential election. Of course, we probably won’t see Shawnee Tanz come close to reaching these heights. Instead she’s likely to be the one that dictates every little move of the incompetent Jonah, even though she really should be the one in the public eye.

Depressingly, Jonah’s increasing incompetence, his bouts of rage, which we saw erupt at the end of Justice because of his inability to understand Daylight saving time, and being completely at odds with the political landscape is making him increasingly similar to the man that is currently leading the U.S government. And because of Donald Trump’s own ascent, the thought of Jonah Ryan rising all the way to the top of the American political echelon suddenly doesn’t seem so far-fetched.
