Veep’s writers are aware that the comedy is becoming too real

‘Veep’ has got quite the task on its hand to somehow match the absurdity of Donald Trump’s impending presidency, while at the same time finding humour in a political landscape that’s now so fraught and divisive.

It turns out that ‘Veep’s cast is very much aware of just how large their task is, too, as Tony Hale admitted last week that the line between comedy and real-life politics has never been greyer.

The ‘Arrested Development’ veteran, who plays Selina Meyer’s put upon but endlessly loyal assistant Gary Walsh in ‘Veep’, made this admission to Vulture on Friday, confessing that modern politics keeps on matching their crazy antics.

“What’s been scary is sometimes we go crazy and sometimes it happens in the news,” Hale explained, before he then provided the example of, “’Continuity With Change’ was one of Selina’s slogans, and then some Australian guy had his slogan as, ‘Continuity With Change.’ We’re just like, ‘What’s happening?!’”

“Many times it comes true, so I think our writers are a little afraid of what to write sometimes, because they don’t want it to come out.”

Obviously ‘Veep’s’ clairvoyance isn’t quite as strong as both Tony Hale and the show’s writing team believes, because while Selina Meyer briefly ascended from her position as the Vice President to become the first female and the 45th President of The United States, Hillary Clinton wasn’t able to do so in real life as she lost to Donald Trump in the US election last month.

Because of Trump’s success, Tony Hale believes that there might now “be a lot of parallels happening between ‘Veep’ and Trump,” as he added, “I think in any administration, there’s s*** behind the scenes going on all the time, but it just seems like in this administration the s*** is going to be a little more on the surface. So we’re going to maybe have a little more of a bird’s-eye view of what’s going on.”

Basically we can expect to see Selina Meyer randomly tweeting at all times of the night, mimicking the disabled, boasting about certain parts of her anatomy, and just repeatedly lying in the sixth season of ‘Veep’. Scenes that will be funny and oh so depressing because they’re actually true.
