Greggs vegan ‘sausage' roll launches this Veganuary following PETA petition

High street bakery Greggs is throwing itself into Veganuary with the launch of a vegan 'sausage' roll.

Available alongside the regular roll, Greggs' bestselling product, the new offering will be free of animal products, replacing the sausage filling with Quorn, and wrapping it in 96 layers of puff pastry.

The roll will be available in 950 selected stores across the country from tomorrow, January 3, and will cost £1.

The decision has come after a petition by animal welfare organisation PETA was launched last year calling on Greggs to product a vegan version of the product, of which 1.5 million are sold every week. The petition was signed by more than 20,000 people.

“Like many food retailers we have seen increasing demand for vegetarian and vegan products,” said Roger Whiteside, the chief executive of Greggs.

“We have been trying to develop a Vegan version of our famous sausage roll for some time now. It has not been easy but our taste panel customers all love this one, so we have decided to launch it as our contribution to Veganuary.”

The launch of the roll coincides with the Veganuary campaign, a movement which encourages people to embrace vegan diets for the month of January.

The vegan sausage roll will be available in selected Greggs stores from January 3. For more information, visit greggs.co.uk
