Two friends and their families have set up an Indian-style restaurant in a Huddersfield suburb.

Restaurant and takeaway 'Gurparsad' can be found in Lidget Street in Lindley and has been set up by friends Harjinder Singh, from Fenay Bridge, and Palwinder Singh, from Birkby, both in Huddersfield.

Both men are Sikhs and do not eat meat, fish or eggs, and they don't drink or smoke. They wanted to set up a restaurant to cater for diners, including Sikhs, who love veggie and vegan food, and for those who may wish to try non-meat dishes for the first time.

The kitchen uses soya and pea protein rather than meat.

Palwinder, who is known as Pally, said all the food was freshly prepared. Gurparsad - which means 'Blessing of the Guru' - opened on Tuesday, June 4, and will have a restricted menu for a short time while everyone finds their feet. Around half of the dishes are not available at present, including curries.

Palwinder described Gurparsad as one of only a handful of restaurants in the north to adhere to strict culinary rules followed by Sikhs. Food is prepared and cooked in the traditional Sikh way.

The menu will eventually include curries but at the moment features various Indian-style starters, mains and desserts, as well as pizzas, wraps, and burgers. There is an extensive dessert menu including Indian sweets and cakes, all made without eggs.

There is seating for around 30 downstairs, with further space upstairs although this has yet to be renovated. The restaurant manager is Gavin Singh.

The restaurant is open from 11am to 8pm Tuesday to Sundays and can be found on Lidget Street, Lindley, Huddersfield.
