Yahoo News Venom the Spider-Man spin-off movie is coming soon
We've yet to see Tom Holland's Spider-Man in his own standalone web-slinging movie but Sony are obviously keen to get cracking on their own movie universe.
His arch-nemesis Venom is going to get his own film, which will start filming in autumn 2017.
Venom is a Spidey supervillain/anti-hero who turns Peter Parker's rival Eddie Brock into a giant black, glucky monster thanks to the symbiote which crashed to Earth. This is the same space stuff that gave Spider-Man his awesome black suit, FYI.
We've already seen the character portrayed awfully in 2007's Spider-Man 3, so hopefully the new stand-alone film will fare much better.
The thing is, Venom is not a good guy, so making a standard superhero movie wouldn't really work for the character – especially given the inevitable fact he'll have to clash with Spider-Man at some stage on the big screen.
My Entertainment World have listed the production of the film along with a "Action/Horror/Sci-fi" genre, which sounds like a waaaay better fit.
There had been rumours that Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds sci-fi horror Life was a prequel to Venom, but that turned out to be untrue.
The horror setting could also hint at an R-rated version of the movie, which is quite the vogue thing in super-films at the moment with both Deadpool and Logan proving you can make mega-dosh even when it's made for adults.
The news comes soon after Sony confirmed they're also making a female-led Spider-Man spin-off starring Black Cat and Silver Sable.
Are all of these offshoot movies a bit ambitious given that they haven't even released Homecoming yet?
Despite the ground-breaking deal to add Sony's Spider-Man back into Marvel's Cinematic Universe, it's thought that Venom won't be part of that crossover deal.
Although that could still change and if Spider-Man ends up in the black suit again – which is pretty inevitable as it's incredibly cool – as that could be a way to weave in the storyline without the Venom character.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to swing into cinemas on July 7 2017, following on from the web-head's cameo in Captain America: Civil War.
