New Vent Opens on Cumbre Vieja Volcano Erupting on La Palma

A new eruptive vent opened along La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano on Friday, October 15, releasing gas southeast of the main vent, according to Involcan.

Video filmed by Twitter user @efadi_LP, who said it was taken on Friday night, shows lava flowing along the northern side of the volcanic cone, he wrote in a tweet.

Around 7,000 people across the island had evacuated as of Friday, El Pais reported.

According to Ruben Fernandez, technical director of Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan, scientists detected a reduction in explosiveness and an increase in the emission of lava, creating more unpredictable conditions to evaluate, El Pais wrote. Credit: Idafe.com via Storyful
