As his former Vera co-stars get ready to watch themselves on screen in the last ever series, Kenny Doughty has landed a major new TV drama role, alongside his famous wife Ashley Jensen.

Many ITV viewers were gutted in spring 2023, when Kenny, the second sidekick to star alongside Brenda Blethyn in Vera, announced that he'd walked away from playing Aiden Healy after eight years. Kenny filmed his final scenes as Aiden at the end of 2022, for Christmas special The Rising Tide, which drew in a huge audience to ITV on Boxing Day last year.

Months after his Vera exit, Kenny tied the knot with Ashley in a 'secret' wedding, with the couple then making their first appearance as husband and wife at the 2023 Scottish BAFTA awards. Earlier this year, Kenny headed to Shetland as she filmed the newest series of the BBC drama of the same, in which she now plays the leading role.

And, after he revealed he will soon star alongside Poirot legend David Suchet in new Channel 5 thriller Au Pair, Kenny has now announced he'll be starring with other half Ashley in Wax Fruit, which he described on Instagram as a 'Scottish period drama with wonderful scripts, locations but most importantly characters & stories for everyone.'

The story was broken by The Herald newspaper, who told its readers that the 'long forgotten Scottish masterpiece was being 'brought back to life in an ambitious TV production.'

Kenny's followers were quit to react, with one, clearly still not over him quitting Vera, replied: "Broken man when you left Vera," as another commented: "A wonderful acting couple."
