Vernon Kay left his BBC Radio 2 co-star Scott Mills gobsmacked on the airwaves this morning, after revealing that he's had minor roles in Hollyoaks and Coronation Street. The conversation kicked off with Scott discussing Dermot O'Leary's recent cameo in EastEnders and was curious to know if Vernon had ever tried out acting.

Initially hesitant, Vernon, 50, responded: "Oh, don't get me started on that," before confessing to roles on both Hollyoaks and Coronation Street. He spilled: "I was in the first episode of Hollyoaks," which prompted Scott to respond: "I'm sorry, you were in the first episode?"

"I bought a pint at the bar in the Duck in the Pond," explained Vernon. "I bought a paper in the cabin on Corrie and bought a pint in the Rovers." On the Hollyoaks set however, the presenter revealed that his nerves led to him being a bit of a nuisance, as he stumbled over camera equipment multiple times.

He shared: "I fell over the camera and I fell over the cabling attached to the camera several times, so the actors got the right hump. They were like, 'Mate all you've got to do is walk', I was really nervous."

According to former Hollyoaks actor James Redmond, Vernon's image at an audition prevented him from landing the part of Rory 'Finn' Finnigan.

The actor, who played the character from 1997 to 2002, recounted: "I went up there with Vernon Kay. We went up together and auditioned for Finn.

"There was hundreds of us in this room. It was funny because the brief was, 'He's a bit of a hunk but he doesn't know it'. I just thought, 'I don't know what that means really'."

Closely following the description given, he observed that Vernon, along with other hopefuls, arrived in baggy vests trying to showcase their physique, yet this was not what the producers were seeking.

"It was just a bit posey in there," James disclosed on The Morning After with Paul Danan podcast.

"When I did my bit in front of creator Phil Redmond, they were saying, 'We like that you were just being yourself, not trying to be this posey guy'."

Vernon has previously revealed that a part on the Cobbles was potentially waiting for him, however nothing came from it.

In a chat with Digital Spy back in 2011, he added: "I would be up for doing it now. Corrie has a real subtle undertone of comedy and that is what I have been brought up around."
