A teenager has admitted causing the death of her 20-month-old daughter, who died of neglect.

Verphy Kudi, 19, pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Lewes Crown Court in East Sussex. She had been due to stand trial later this year,

Her daughter, Asiah Kudi, died at an address in Brighton in December 2019.

She was taken to Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in the city but was confirmed dead on arrival.

Neglect was given as the reason for her death following a post-mortem examination and forensic tests.

Judge Christine Laing QC told Kudi the defence would be commissioning a report on her behalf prior to sentencing.

She added: "A doctor will no doubt make arrangements to see you and interview you over the next few weeks."

Judge Laing ordered that all social services records relating to the case be disclosed to the defence ahead of sentencing.

A provisional date for sentencing has been set for 28 May, but Kudi was warned it may be delayed.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Wolstenholme, senior investigating officer, said: "This was a particularly distressing case for my team and me to investigate, and has caused great sorrow amongst Verphy's family and the many agencies that have supported Verphy and Asiah.

"We note the guilty plea entered in this case, and continue to prepare for Verphy's sentencing."
