'Vibrant' pub to reopen with 'unique dining experience'
A well-known Sefton pub is set to reopen before the end of the month after being taken over by one of the region's most respected chefs. The Hightown Pub has been rebranded as The Hightown Inn following its purchase by Graffiti Spirits Group after its sudden closure earlier this year.
The pub, on Lower Alt Road, bid farewell with "a heavy heart" on Friday, March 8, after its owners said they were forced to close due to the worsening climate of the hospitality industry and the cost of living crisis. However, GSG, the team behind Duke Street Market and NORD, has now taken over and put its Executive Chef Daniel Heffy at the helm.
The location will return on Monday, October 28 and, in the days leading up to the opening, will host a soft launch weekend from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 October, offering a sneak preview of the new restaurant and pub menu.

The Hightown Inn promises to deliver a memorable dining experience rooted in tradition and quality. It says the menu will feature product-focused, seasonal dishes that celebrate fresh, local ingredients, accompanied by simple, well-crafted cocktails. Guests are told to expect an informal yet attentive service, with a knowledgeable team ready to enhance every visit.
Daniel Heffy shared his excitement for the opening. He said: "We’re creating a space that reflects the heart of the local community, where great food, drinks, and company come together. We can’t wait to share that with our guests.”
Following news of the pub's comeback, Daniel spoke to the ECHO in June. He said: "[The founders of GSG] have always dreamed of adding an elevated pub establishment to their portfolio. When the opportunity to acquire the Hightown Pub arose, it was the perfect location to turn that dream into a reality!"
Daniel left Liverpool in 2016, where he had just opened the Buyers Club restaurant, to embark on an exciting journey in Sweden. His goal was to work in some of the best kitchens in the world, and that’s exactly what he did, landing a position at Restaurant Frantzén, a prestigious three Michelin-starred establishment.
He said of the experience: "It was intense and transformative, pushing me to refine my skills and innovate constantly. After two incredible years at Frantzén, I became the head chef at Adam & Albin, an emerging restaurant in Sweden.
"Over the next three years, I used my managerial skills and culinary expertise to help the restaurant earn its first Michelin star. It was a rewarding period, both professionally and personally."
Eventually, family considerations led Daniel and his partner to return to Liverpool, where he became the Executive Chef at NORD. He added: "We brought back a wealth of experiences and newfound confidence, ready to contribute to the culinary scene here.
"As the executive chef at NORD, I’m dedicated to celebrating Northern hospitality and heritage. We focus on building strong relationships with local suppliers and offering friendly, engaging service.
"This journey has been about growth, exploration, and returning home with a richer perspective on food and hospitality. I’m excited to continue to elevate the dining experience in the North."
GSG has overseen an extensive refurbishment of The Hightown Inn. The venue will continue to operate as a traditional pub on the ground floor, maintaining its local charm and welcoming atmosphere. The first floor will feature a British restaurant, offering a refined menu crafted by Daniel.
He said: "The new pub will stand out by focusing on local suppliers, ensuring we offer unparalleled quality ingredients at attractive prices. Our concept revolves around creating a space for great food and a great atmosphere, serving as a hub for local businesses to showcase their produce.
"It will be a place where the community can come together to enjoy exceptional meals in a welcoming environment, supporting local artisans and producers in the process. The people of Hightown should be excited about the new venture because it promises to bring a unique dining experience to the community.
"This new location will be more than just a pub; it will be a hub for local businesses to showcase their produce, fostering a sense of community and support for local artisans. With great food, a vibrant atmosphere, and a commitment to celebrating local talent, this venture will quickly become a beloved spot for residents to gather, dine, and enjoy."
