Vicar of Dibley star Emma Chambers dies aged 53

The Vicar of Dibley star Emma Chambers has sadly passed away aged 53.

According to a statement from her agency (via BBC News), the actress died of natural causes and will be "greatly missed".

"Emma created a wealth of characters and an immense body of work," the statement continued. "She brought laughter and joy to many".

Chambers was perhaps best known for playing the role of Alice Tinker in the Dawn French BBC comedy series The Vicar of Dibley.

She also starred in Notting Hill as Honey Thacker and a 1994 adaptation of Charles Dickens' Martin Chuzzlewit as Charity Pecksniff.

She is survived by her husband, actor Ian Dunn.

Chambers was born in Doncaster and started out her acting career in shows such as The Bill before starring in The Vicar of Dibley.

Chambers' character in the comedy was known for her dim-witted nature and shared many of the series' funniest scenes with French's vicar Geraldine Granger.

She also appeared in comedy series Drop The Dead Donkey, and her last formal acting credit is the 2003 TV show Little Robots.

Emma Freud, the partner of Richard Curtis who directed Notting Hill and produced The Vicar of Dibley, also shared a heartfelt tribute on the social media site in which she called Chambers "our beautiful friend";
