Award-winning hairdresser Jason Collier has an impressive client roster that includes Victoria Beckham, Eva Longoria, Sadie Frost and Helen McCrory. So he knows how to cut, colour and style those celebrity haircuts we're constantly coveting.

He's also seen his fair share of hair styling mistakes over the years. Whether that's clients using the wrong products for their hair type – or turning the hair straighteners up too high – Jason says it's all too easy to damage the hair and end up spending more time in the salon chair.

Here, he shares the five styling errors he spots most in his salon – and how to avoid them...

Overusing products

"One mistake I see often is when people are unable to style their hair – or get it under control – they throw on more product hoping it will solve the problem. This is a big no-no as it ends up making hair greaser and looking worse. If you're unable to get any control over unruly hair, simply try hiding it with a ponytail or hat, or start all over again with a fresh blow dry."

Using the wrong products

"Before you buy a new hair product you should always remember to do your research, if not consult your hairdresser."

Using products incorrectly

"'I've used that product before – it made my hair really greasy and heavy,' is something I hear a lot. Almost 90 per cent of the time people are using the product incorrectly by applying too much, or placing the bottle too close when spraying into the hair."

"For example, when applying a leave-in treatment such as Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate & Repair Multi-Action Leave-In Conditioner, hold it at arm's length, spray roughly about 4-6 light sprays all over and comb through hair to ensure it's evenly spread."

Waiting too long between haircuts

"This is a really common mistake that people make. By waiting too long between trims you end up having to use more products and styling tools to try and maintain the shape, which only ends up drying the hair out. It also results in needing to cut more length to maintain health."

Not using hairdryers and straighteners correctly

"Using tools like hairdryers and straighteners the right way is crucial to maintain the health of your hair. In every other Instagram video of people blow-drying their hair, they are pointing the hairdryer in the wrong direction. The hair dryer should be blow drying your hair towards the ground to help close the hair shaft and smooth the hair. Also, remember with any heat tool to start with a low temperature. Your hair will style best when its set to the right setting."
