Firefighters are battling a huge blaze near a busy east London park.

Video footage showed smoke billowing into the sky above rooftops after the fire broke out in a shop and flats above by Victoria Park on Thursday evening.

The London Fire Brigade said ten fire engines and 70 firefighters tackled the inferno, believed to be in Lauriston Road.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 5.22pm.

Crews from Bethnal Green, Homerton, Stoke Newington, Shoreditch, Poplar, Shadwell, Leyton and Millwall fire stations arrived on the scene.

They earlier tweeted: “10 fire engines & around 70 firefighters are tackling a blaze in a building off Victoria Park.”

The London Fire Brigade said the fire was under control by 6.29pm.

Part of the basement, ground and first floor was damaged by fire, they said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
