ITV has released first-look pictures from the Victoria Christmas special that hint viewers are in for a festive and treat, complete with a covering of snow.

Jenna Coleman returns to the drama as Queen Victoria alongside Tom Hughes as Prince Albert in the special two-hour long episode which will air on Christmas Day

Entitled Comfort and Joy, the programme is set in 1846 when the monarch was pregnant with her fourth child.

It will see the royals enjoying a traditional Victorian Christmas, but not before they’ve navigated a few obstacles.

The show's creator and writer Daisy Goodwin has promised there will be plenty of love, but also "near death and really annoying relatives".

She also teased that the "Christmas spirit [will be] stretched to the limit upstairs and downstairs".

The episode finds the Queen in a melancholy mood, as the festive period takes her back to her lonely childhood spent at Kensington, but she finds a welcome distraction when she takes in an abandoned child.

Albert becomes obsessed with turning the palace into a perfect magical wonderland, and tensions rise as he invites some unwelcome house guests to join the celebrations.

Victoria airs on Christmas Day at 9pm on ITV.
