Victorian-era Surrey pub hits the market for the first time in 40 years
For many, the fantasy of owning a historic pub in a quaint Surrey village is a pipe dream. The thought of cosy evenings by a roaring fire, the hum of friendly chatter amongst locals and being amongst century-old cobbled streets imbued with local lore is seen as unattainable.
But no longer, as an opportunity has arisen which may allow you to be at the helm of a Victorian-era pub which is highly rated by customers and located in a central part of the village.
The Bricklayers Arms pub in Hersham is looking for new operators after the current owners, who have ran the pub for 40 years, plan on retiring.

A spokesperson from Fleurets, the estate agents overseeing the sale, said becoming the new owner of the Bricklayers Arms is a "rare" opportunity to take control of a pub in which you can "build on the successes" of the previous owners.
This pub, is described as 'well maintained' by Fleurets, and features a spacious three-bedroom owner’s flat, two traditionally decorated bars, two unsuited letting rooms, and a 'sun trap' beer garden which provides approximately 28 covers for customers.
Additionally, the Bricklayers Arms offers the 'best of both' worlds in terms of location, being positioned around 300 metres from Hersham's main retail centre. While Hersham itself is a small village, you will be very close to recognisable towns such as Walton-on-Thames, Weybridge and Kingston just a bit further on.
But not only this, being in the northern Surrey borough of Elmbridge, the pub is near the Greater London area, making it only a short 20 minute journey to central London, if you use nearby railway stations such as in Walton-on-Thames.
And you won't have to build from the bottom, as the Bricklayers Arms is already a well rated pub in the area. on TripAdvisor, the reviews the pub has received place it as the second best restaurant in Hersham.
TripAdvisor reviews from August 2023 paint the pub as having a "cosy atmosphere" with an "excellent Sunday roast", but they do mention they believe the pub has "limited seating", which is a problem the new owners could solve.
Another TripAdvisor review from 2022 described the the Bricklayers Arms as: "Best Sunday roast in the area. We're never disappointed with meals here. Food always tasty and portions are generous. Pretty garden and chilled atmosphere. Highly recommended."
While these reviews may suggest that visitors have high expectations, over the last few years the Hersham pub has also received some more negative reviews, where customers were left "very disappointed", with one reviewer believing the establishment is "past its best". This suggests that there may be some work to do to build on from the mostly positive reputation of the Bricklayers Arms.
Director and Head of National Agency for Fleurets, James Davies, commented on the sale of this pub:
"The Bricklayers Arms presents a fantastic opportunity for operators seeking a well-positioned, traditional pub with an established reputation. The current owner, who has successfully run the pub for over four decades, is retiring, marking a rare chance for a new operator to take the reins and build on its success."
