Video: Golf ball-sized hailstones hit quiet Missouri neighbourhood

It looks more like a scene from a golf driving range, but it is in fact footage of an intense hailstorm hitting a quiet US suburb.

The extreme weather event was filmed by a Missouri resident standing on their front porch in Maryland Heights, St Louis.

During the two minute-long clip, golf ball-sized hailstones measuring up to three inches in diameter are seen falling from the sky – ricocheting off driveways and gardens.

Some of the giant ice pellets explode as they hit the ground.

Alarms sound throughout the footage as the powerful hailstorm shatters two car windows.

On Saturday evening, thunderstorms dumped heavy rain and hail all over the St Louis area, leaving thousands of residents without power.

One person was killed by a lightning strike.
