Video Of ATM Ram-Raid Released As Gang Jailed

CCTV footage has been released which shows a gang attempting to steal thousands of pounds by ram-raiding a cash machine using stolen farm machinery.

North Yorkshire Police described the conspiracy as "outlandish in the extreme" as the five men involved in the plot were jailed.

The raid, which began at around 2.30am on 5 July 2013, prompted an "exhaustive investigation" to find the criminals.

A CCTV recording shows the telehandler vehicle breaking down a wall before tearing the ATM from the building and driving away.

The five men pleaded guilty to conspiring to steal from the Co-op store in Ryedale, North Yorkshire.

They are: John Corrigan, 28, from Broome Road, Durham; Jason Mawson, 45, from Grey Street, Crook, County Durham; Paul Wilson, 49, from Low Moor Road, Darlington; Stefan Hargreaves, 26, of Stanley Road, Heysham, Lancashire; and Adam Palmer, 21, from Sefton Road, Heysham.

Detectives were able to connect the men to the crime scene through phone records, fingerprints and DNA from the cigarettes they discarded outside the shop.

Suspicious activity and vehicle movements had also been reported at a nearby campsite where the gang had gathered before and after the ram-raid.

At Teesside Crown Court, they each received sentences of between three and four years.

Detective Constable Clair Gascoyne, from Scarborough's Serious Crime Team, said: "No matter how well they thought they had planned 'the job' with the aim of getting away with it, the suspects clearly hadn't reckoned on North Yorkshire Police's sheer determination to hunt them down and our aim to put them behind bars for a very long time.

"It was certainly a complex investigation that was painstaking at times while establishing the evidence and building the case, but the end result is very satisfying and we hope the victims will gain some comfort from the outcome at court."
