Video: Thief Rams Police Car During Pursuit

Footage has been released of the moment a car thief rammed a police car as he attempted to make his way out of patrol blockade.

Daryl Gordon, 24, had been spotted by officers driving the stolen Vauxhall Insignia and was then boxed in by two police cars during a pursuit in the West Midlands.

Gordon, from Cotteridge, tried to squeeze through, but he hit the front vehicle and a police dashboard camera picked up the screeching sound of the cars coming together.

Another camera on a police helicopter filmed Gordon carrying out the dangerous manoeuvre on the A38 towards Birmingham.

The Insignia ended up being brought to a stop on the central reservation and Gordon - who was banned from driving in 2012 - was then arrested as he clambered out of the driver's window.

Another suspect was filmed by the helicopter fleeing along the road and into fields.

Police said checks revealed the car - which was being driven on cloned plates - was stolen overnight between 1-2 April after the keys were taken from a property in Stirchley.

Unemployed Gordon admitted aggravated vehicle taking and dangerous driving.

He was jailed for 14 months and given a two-year driving ban at Birmingham Crown Court.

Passenger Kenny Field, 29, from Frankley, was jailed for 12 months for aggravated vehicle taking, while two other men were found not guilty.

Officer Mitch Darby, who was involved in the pursuit, said it lasted around 60 seconds, adding: "Gordon tried in vain to shunt my vehicle out of the way - and caused quite a bit of damage - but he was soon in handcuffs."
