A 12-year-old girl has been ‘beaten unconscious’ by school bullies following a fall out over trainers, and some of the shocking assault has been caught on camera.

Katie Morris says she required hospital treatment after the assault at Ivanhoe College, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire.

The assault was filmed by a bystander, and has since gone viral after Katie’s mum, Antonia King, posted the clip on her Facebook page. It was then uploaded to an anti-bullying website where it’s received more than 300,000 views.

Katie says that the girls responsible had been bullying her for some time, but when she tried to defend herself against slurs against her trainer - that they were from a charity shop - things got physical.

“They’d been bullying me for quite a while and I’d never said anything back before. But I said one thing back one day - it wasn’t that bad - and they started hitting me.

"I tried standing up, and when I did they pulled my hair and pushed me back. I tried fighting back but then they pushed me in to the stinging nettles.”

Katie says that she was then knocked unconscious, before being taken to hospital.

Despite being shown footage of what occurred, the school only suspended the girls’ responsible for three days before allowing them back to to attend a school trip.

Mrs King said: "I wanted people to see how disgusting these girls are and posting the video was a call for help really. I felt let down and didn’t know where else to turn.”

The mother-of-three hopes that publicising her daughter’s experience will help protect other children from being assaulted.

"You see more and more of these videos where young girls are being attacked - it just seems to be more rife,” she says.

“I don’t want any more children to suffer - be that my own or any other parents’. More needs to be done in schools to stop this bullying.”

Leicestershire Police confirmed the incident was being investigated, with a spokesman saying: ‘We are aware that a video of an alleged assault in Ashby has been circulated on social media.

“The video relates to an altercation involving two teenage girls in Ashby on the Tuesday, June 23. Both parties have been identified and enquiries are underway into the report.”

The school’s principal, Anne-Marie Blewitt, said: “Instances of this nature are very rare at Ivanhoe and we have taken swift action to investigate. The college has taken action against the pupils involved in accordance with the behavioural policy and involved the police.

“The safety and welfare of all of our pupils is our highest priority and we want to reassure parents that we have robust procedures in place which we have followed, including contacting all the parents involved.

“We understand that people may have concerns and would strongly encourage anyone who is worried about their child or another pupil to contact the Principal or Business Manager.”
