A video shared on social media shows the moment that two London Underground trains appear to be ‘racing’. The video reportedly shows trains being driven between Hammersmith and Acton Town stations.

The video shows the two Tube trains travelling almost parallel to each other. As the video goes on one of the London Underground trains pulls away, winning the ‘race’. In the video there is also a voice speaking through a megaphone, which we are led to believe is the driver, offering commentary. He says: “We’re taking over! It’s a close one, I think we’re gonna edge it.”

Then as his train pulls away he celebrates victory: “Well done give yourself a tap on the back.” In response to the video one person posted to X: “This is the Piccadilly and District lines, always happens.”

However, another pointed out: “They’re not really racing, the Piccadilly goes faster in this section as they don’t have to stop between Hammersmith and Acton Town whereas the district line does. The drivers just brightening the mood of people on board.” And another user said: “Two different trains and tracks, but same route, can’t be racing.”

The run between Acton Town and Hammersmith is nearly three miles, making it the longest distance on the Piccadilly line. The journey takes around ten minutes on the Piccadilly line, but around 20 minutes on the District line, which serves all stops.

Transport for London (TfL) has been contacted for comment but has not provided a statement.
