2 Members of Congress Man WWII Plane for VE-Day Celebration

Thousands looked skyward in Washington, DC as a rare variety of World War II-era planes flew over the the National Mall on Friday, April 8, as part of the 70th anniversary Victory in Europe celebration. More than 50 aircraft flew over the city before returning to airports in Virginia. Representative Todd Rokita, R-Indiana, shot this video from the cockpit of a TBM Avenger torpedo bomber piloted by Representative Sam Graves, R-Missouri.

Rokita’s video shows a unique view of the capital, and three vintage aircraft come into view: First, an F4U Corsair, an American fighter aircraft that distinguished itself against the Japanese and was made famous by ace Pappy Boyington; a P-51 Mustang, often considered as the best fighter aircraft of the Second World War; and a P-40 Warhawk, which Boyington also flew as a member of the Flying Tigers force.
