Abbas Moves to Join UN Agencies

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas signed requests to join 15 United Nations agencies on April 1, to gain further Palestinian recognition in a move which could threaten current peace talks. According to local reports, Abbas issued the following statement: “The Palestinian leadership has unanimously approved a decision to seek membership of 15 UN agencies and international treaties, beginning with the Fourth Geneva Convention.”

The official signing came at a PLO meeting in Ramallah and can be seen in the video above. The move comes after Israel has stalled in releasing a group of Palestinian prisoners, which was agreed when peace talks began last summer. Credit: President M.Abbas
