Activists Film Contested Yarmouk Refugee Camp

Islamic State militants reportedly withdrew from Syria’s Yarmouk refugee camp for Palestinians on April 15, two days before the United Nations issued an appeal of 30 million USD to deliver what they described as “life-sustaining assistance” to 18,000 refugees from the besieged refugee camp, including 3,500 children.

Weeks of battles between rebel groups, Syrian authorities and Islamic State militants who attempted to seize the camp in early April has caused the camp significant damage and prompted the UN to expand its operations to nearby Yalda, where hundreds of families from Yarmouk have sought refuge. Media activists posted footage showing scenes from around the camp, including damaged infrastructure and schools. Credit: YouTube/ Syrian Media Organization
