Anniversary of Michael Brown's Death Remembered in Ferguson

Activists and Ferguson community members gathered to remember Michael Brown on the anniversary of his death on August 9. The ceremonies, held near where Brown was fatally shot, included speeches and a four and one-half minute moment of silence, which marked the hours that it took for emergency responders to remove Brown’s body. A silent march was to follow the ceremonies near the Canfield Green Apartments.

A weekend of events, including marches, were scheduled throughout the weekend to mark the anniversary of Brown’s death. Brown, who was unarmed, was shot by Officer Darren Wilson on August 9, 2014, and the event sparked protests and unrest in the St. Louis suburb. It is also considered the start of the national Black Likes Matter movement, which calls for criminal justice reforms.

In addition to the events in Ferguson on August 9, there were marches and memorials scheduled around the country, including in New York City and Pittsburgh. Credit: Instagram/tasha_renee_4
