Anti-Government Protesters March to Quito's Central Square

Hundreds of Ecuadorians marched to the central square in Quito on August 19 in a renewed protest against President Rafael Correa’s policy reforms and plans for widening exploration of natural resources. Recent days have seen widespread protests, clashes and a general strike over reported plans for extending oil and water exploration on indigenous land as well as anti-trade union labour reforms.

Simultaneously government supporters gathered in nearby Independence Plaza, which was blocked off by police ahead of the arrival of the opposition march. Credit: Instagram/cayg1995
