Anti-Parallel Trading Protesters Storm Hong Kong Shopping Mall

More than 100 people gathered in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong, on March 8 to protest against parallel traders, or shoppers that buy goods in Hong Kong and resell them at a higher cost in mainland China. Protesters chanted “clamp down on parallel trading” and “scrap multiple-visit permits” while storming a shopping mall, prompting many shops to shut down earlier than usual.

Scuffles broke out later in the day following police efforts to disperse the crowd. Four were arrested.

Similar protests were reported on Sunday, March 8, at Sheung Shui MTR station and Tsim Sha Tsui, a popular shopping district among mainland Chinese shoppers. Sunday’s demonstrations were the latest of a series of protests targeting parallel traders.
