Baltimore Demonstrations Fill the Streets Ahead of Curfew

People filled the streets in Baltimore on May 1, the same day six police officers were charged in connection with the death of Freddie Gray. Protesters marched through the Penn-North neighborhood and to Baltimore City Hall. This video shows people in the streets in the Penn-North neighborhood, with horns blowing.

State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby announced the charges against the six police officers earlier in the day. The charges included murder, manslaughter, assault and misconduct. The police union criticized the charges brought by the state’s attorney and asked for a special prosecutor to be appointed, according to the Baltimore Sun.

The decision prompted celebrations in the streets, including in the Penn-North neighborhood, where protests and unrest had been centered this week.

Gray suffered critical injuries when he was arrested on April 12 and died a week later. His death sparked a police investigation and protests, which turned to unrest on April 27. The Maryland National Guard was activated and a nightly curfew was imposed in response to the unrest. Hundreds were arrested for the destruction and looting, and dozens of police officers were injured. Credit: Instagram/Kayla Evans
