Baltimore Police to Be Retrained on Procedures Amid Arrest Concerns

Baltimore police officers will be retrained in proper procedures after six officers were arrested in connection with the death of Freddie Gray from injuries he suffered while in police custody. Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said officers have been concerned that they could be arrested for not following proper protocol. US Justice Department will work with officers on proper procedures, he said.

Batts spoke with reporters before attending a Baltimore City Council meeting about the budget on May 27. He was also asked about a report that he apologized to the police union about putting them in harm’s way during the unrest that ensued after Gray’s death.

Batts told reporters he had apologized, saying he prioritized training for officers on officer-involved shootings and on the use of force rather than things like crowd control, which would have helped during the protests and unrest. Credit: YouTube/Baltimore Police
