Baltimore Residents Assess Damage From Unrest

Baltimore residents and business employees were out assessing damage and cleaning up their neighborhoods on April 28, a day after unrest swept the western part of the city. This video shows the inside of a North-Penn neighborhood CVS that was set on fire on April 27.

The Mondawmin Mall, where the unrest initially broke out, was described as a disaster zone, according to The Baltimore Sun, although not every story was hit by looters. Residents from the neighborhood also brought out brooms to sweep up bricks and broken glass.

Riots broke out in Baltimore on April 27, shortly after Freddie Gray’s funeral. Gray, arrested on April 12, died a week later from spinal injuries. The circumstances of his arrest and the injuries are under investigation.

Monday’s unrest started after a flier was circulated calling for a potentially violent demonstration. During the evening and night, people and police clashed as buildings were set on fire and businesses were looted. Authorities declared a state of emergency, and the governor activated the Maryland National Guard. A curfew also was ordered by the mayor. Credit: Instagram/mandalovee94
