Baltimore SWAT Team Responds to Unrest at Mall

Baltimore police in riot gear clashed with teenagers at a downtown mall on Monday, April 27, after rumors of a protest put authorities on high alert. Students gathered at Mondawmin Mall following a funeral for Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who suffered a fatal spinal cord injury while in police custody. Police fired tear gas canisters during the demonstration and at least seven officers were injured, according to initial reports.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Mondawmin Mall and several other institutions were shuttered at 2pm, amid concerns over violence. According to the Baltimore Sun, a flier was circulated on Monday calling for a high school “purge,” or protest, scheduled to kick off from Mondawmin Mall to city center at 3pm eastern time. The incident comes two days after confrontations between police and protesters broke out outside of Orioles Park at Camden Yards during what had been otherwise peaceful demonstration.
