Ban Ki-Moon Cites Progress and Challenges 20 Years on From Beijing Declaration

On International Women’s Day, March 8, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon looked back to 1995, and the Beijing Declaration on women’s rights. He said the declaration had given a “clear roadmap” to gender equality. He said there had been dramatic progress, with more girls accessing education than ever before. Yet, he said, “too many women” were still the targets of abuse and violence.

He said the world would never realize 100 percent of its potential if 50 percent of its population was held back. Credit: Facebook/UNAMI
