Bangladesh: deadly clashes after Islamist politician gets death penalty

At least 30 people have been killed in Bangladesh in clashes with supporters of an Islamist politician. The death toll includes three police officers, according to Bangladesh media reports. Unrest was sparked in more than a dozen areas after Delwar Hossain Sayedee from the Jamaat-e-Islami party was sentenced to death for war crimes during Bangladesh’s breakaway from Pakistan in 1971. Sayedee was convicted of mass killing, rape, arson, looting and forcing minority Hindus to convert to Islam during the conflict.
