Canada Agrees Five-Year Uranium Deal With India

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper agreed on Wednesday, April 15, to a five-year uranium deal worth US$284 million that will help power India’s nuclear reactors.

Bloomberg reported that India, the second-fastest growing market for nuclear power, operates 21 reactors and that six more are expected to be operational by 2017. Cameco Corporation will supply the uranium.

“The agreement on procurement of uranium from Canada for our civilian nuclear power plants launches a new era of bilateral nuclear cooperation,” said Modi during a joint press conference. Credit: YouTube/PMO India
