Catalan Parliament Backs Motion to Split From Spain

The regional Catalan parliament approved on Monday, November 9, a motion to secede from Spain. The vote was carried by a margin of 72 to 63, with the secessionist coalition Junts pel Sí and the smaller CUP outvoting opposition that included the Popular Party, socialists and the leftist Catalunya Si es que Pot alliance, which favors a referendum on independence.
