Ceasefire Violations Continue as International Truce Reviews Begin

Battles resumed around Shyrokyne, on the outskirts of Ukraine’s southern city of Mariupol, on April 12, the day before international talks over the ongoing ceasefire agreement in eastern Ukraine were due to begin. Foreign ministers from France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine were expected to meet in Berlin on Monday to discuss the peace deal that was agreed in February.

Ertugrul Apakan, ambassador for the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, called for government forces and Russian-backed separatists to “exercise maximum restraint” after the fighting resumed in Shyrokyne and around Donetsk airport.

In this video, uploaded by an activist embedded with Ukraine’s volunteer Azov battalion on April 14, heavy gunfire can be heard throughout as battles continue in Shyrokyne. Multiple artillery rounds are seen hitting a building from 1:36. Credit: YouTube/Андрій Дзиндзя
