Celebrations at Treatment Center as Sierra Leone Declared Ebola Free

Sierra Leone celebtrated what the World Health Organisation said was “a landmark” on August 24 as, for the first time in more than a year, there were no people being treated for Ebola and no confirmed cases of the disease in the country. There were scenes of celebration and dancing at the Makeni Ebola treatment unit, run by the International Medical Corps.

In this video, Lawrence Kargobai, an International Medical Corps nurse, speaks of his joy at being “at the beginning of the end of this horrible…disease.”

Later in the footage another nurse, Zoe Wheeler, describes the discharge of the last Ebola patient from the Makeni treatment center.
