Chinese New Year Marred by Violent Clashes in Hong Kong

There were angry scenes on the streets of Hong Kong on Monday, February 8, the first day of Chinese New Year, as police armed with pepper spray clashed with hawkers in the Mongkok area of the city. The clashes were as a result of a city-wide clampdown on street food vendors in the city. Storyful journalist Aaron Mc Nicholas, who was present during the clashes, said that “no warning” was given prior to the use of pepper spray by police. Credit: Instagram/dtizzler
