Corbyn Announces Memorial for Irish Republician

The new leader of Britain’s Labour party, Jeremy Corbyn, announced plans to erect a plaque commemorating a prominent Irish republican during a speech on Saturday, September 26.

Corbyn, who has been criticized for his stance on the conflict in Northern Ireland, said that a plaque commemorating Constance Markievicz will be erected at the refurbished library in his constituency in Islington, London.

Markievicz played a major role in the Irish 1916 Easter Rising and became the first woman elected to the House of Commons. Markievicz, however, was unable to take her seat as she was serving a prison sentence in Islington at the time.
