Shipwrecked Costa Concordia began its final journey on July 23. Here the Italian Coast Guard shows the luxury liner being towed away to a scrapyard in Genoa after a two-year salvage operation off the island of Giglio. The ship capsized in January 2012, causing the deaths of 32 people and forcing 4,229 passengers to jump into the sea, as the lifeboat pulleys failed to deploy.
In order to re-float the Costa Concordia, air was pumped into 30 large metal boxes, or ‘sponsons,’ attached to either side of the hull, which raised it two meters. Credit: YouTube/Guardia Costiera
