Costa Rican Volcano Eruption Causes Airport Closure

Costa Rica’s Turrialba volcano erupted on Monday, May 4, sending ash one-and-a-half miles into the sky over the country’s capital San Jose, according to reports. The ash caused the closure of Juan Santamaría International Airport for nearly 12 hours, with 13 inbound flights affected by the closure.

The Turrialba volcano is currently the most active in Costa Rica, with eruptions and other events since October 2104 causing frequent airport closures. This timelapse footage, from the Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica (OVSICORI-UNA), is described as showing the Turrialba volcano erupting over an eight-hour period on May 5.
