Curfew Imposed in Gujarat After Night of Rioting

A curfew has been imposed across the western Indian state of Gujarat after a night of rioting by the members of the Patel community over access to jobs and education on Tuesday night, August 25. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed for calm on Wednesday morning as fresh clashes broke out between police and protesters. The rioting erupted after the release of Patel leader Hardik Patel following a brief detention.

Patel was arrested by Ahmedabad police after he called for a day of protests that saw sporadic violence, according to a Times of India live blog.

Tuesday saw a massive rally by Patels that descended into clashes with local people. While Patels are economically strong, the community says that quotas for lower castes have put them at a disadvantage.
