Multiple gas explosions in downtown Kaohsiung, Taiwan, left 15 people dead and over 200 injured in the early hours of Friday morning, August 1, according to local news reports. Residents in the area were evacuated to emergency shelters, the municipality’s fire department said in a statement.
The explosions in Qianzhen District were reportedly triggered by gas leaks in the district’s sewage system late Thursday evening.
Eyewitnesses said a white fog began rising in the streets around 9 pm, followed by blasts that rocked Qianzhen, Lingya, Siaogang and Cianjin districts.
