Drivers Flee Fort McMurray as Wildfire Rages Along Highway

An out-of-control wildfire forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate the oilsands city of Fort McMurray, Alberta, on Tuesday, May 3, Edmonton Journal reported. The mandatory evacuation, the largest in Alberta’s history, came as authorities battled the huge blaze, which doubled to 10,000 square miles in just 24 hours. No fatalities or serious injuries had been reported at the time of this writing.

Mike Mackenzie said that he filmed the video with Nathan Jesseau as they fled southbound on Highway 63 from Fort McMurray to Anzac. The pair were deciding whether to continue on to Edmonton. CBC reported that up to 20,000 evacuees were expected to arrive in Edmonton. Credit: Mike MacKenzie and Nathan Jesseau
