Electricity Price-Hike Protesters Remain on Yerevan Streets

Protests continued in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, on June 28 despite a decision from President Serzh Sargsyan to suspend proposed electricity price hikes. Activists claimed the suspension was inadequate and demanded the plans to hike prices be cancelled, saying they would remain in the streets until 6pm on June 28, according to Al Jazeera. Footage uploaded by Azatutyun Radiokayan on June 28 shows continued protests on Baghramyan Avenue.

According to reports from Azatutyun Radiokayan, Deputy Police Chief Valery Osipyan said on June 28 that the police would attempt to restore public order at 11pm if the demonstrators didn’t move on.

The protests were triggered after the government on June 17 said it would increase electricity tariffs by 17 percent from the beginning of August. Credit: YouTube/Azatutyun Radiokayan
