Environmentalists Occupy Melbourne Bank Over Fossil Fuel Investment

Environmental activists occupied the Melbourne offices of Australia’s Commonwealth Bank on May 20, protesting the bank’s involvement in financing Queensland coal mines and associated ports on the Great Barrier Reef. The occupation was part of a broad campaign by the environmental group 350.org, which targeted a branch of the bank in Sydney on the same day and staged protests in Auckland and Ho Chi Minh city earlier in the week, according to ABC.

According to reports, one man at the Melbourne protest injured his ankle while attempting to abseil down the building.

The protesters exited the building at around 7pm local time, according to Nine News Melbourne. Credit: 350.org
